Jared Buono PhD
Department Horticulture
Jared took over the director’s position in October of 2022 just as Cornell AgriTech prepares to celebrate 100 years of regionally focused agricultural research here at Cornell’s Hudson Valley Lab (CHVL). To support this vibrant agricultural region Jared will first assemble a team of researchers to address the most pressing issues faced by the grower community. In addition, he will use his background in hydrology to explore projects in emerging technologies through digital agriculture and agrivoltaics. The agrivoltaic project under consideration will research the use of solar panels over apple trees as a potential dual use strategy for combined agricultural and clean energy production.

FARM is permanently staffed with research scientists specializing in tree-fruit horticulture, plant pathology, and entomology. Each scientist is a member of their respective department at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, NY, which is part of Cornell University. In addition to the three scientists, full-time employees at the lab include the support staff listed below.
Administrative Assistant. Peggy Kent
EDUCATION & BACKGROUND:
Peggy joined the Hudson Valley Research Laboratory team in 2019. She manages the purchasing, budgeting and support services for the lab researchers and staff. In addition, she provides administrative and bookkeeping support for the Hudson Valley Reserach Lab Board of Directors. During her career she has worked in sales, marketing and management across the for-profit, non-profit and higher education sectors. Along with her husband and children she lives on a 200 year old farm where they cultivate over 100 acres of fruits and vegetables for their farmer’s markets, Upick and farm cidery/winery operations. She earned her B.S. and M.B.A in Business Management and Administration.
Farm Manager. Chris Meredith
EDUCATION & BACKGROUND
Chris began his career at the Hudson Valley Research Laboratory as a Technician in the Plant Pathology Lab. He is currently transitioning into the role of farm manager where he is responsible for the care and maintenace of the research orchard, facilities and equipment. His responsibilities include collaboration with researchers and their technicians for oversight and execution of local research projects.
